K, thanks so much for chiming in. I'm happy to hear it's not a total loss after all! Might not be the 1960's or 70's... but at least it seems there some of the folks are keeping the tradition alive.

In turn, that lets your kids make some happy memories as well - and that's the best part.

Merry Christmas, everybody - no matter how many lights you see this year.

We just took a nice drive through the area and our 5 yr old really enjoyed it. Although it was busy, the traffic wasn't bad so we didn't feel claustrophobic. Maybe it's because we didn't go last year, but the displays seemed better than they have been in a while. We live close by and enjoy the trip as a cute and free tradition with young children.

As I've said in the past, thanks everyone for weighing in!

"Sauganash" was more of a general term my parents used when taking us to see Christmas lights as kids in the 1970's and 80's. In fact the Christmas lights had more or less jumped west of the Edens, as JKC points out.

Regardless, there's not much use in driving very far to see the former glory. As a kid, I vividly remember it taking the better part of an hour to see them all - slowly navigating through the neighborhood with hundreds of other cars.

Sorry to hear this tradition has fallen by the wayside.

To clear up the confusion. Sauganash (a neighborhood in Chicago, south of Devon and east of the Edens) used to be the place for Christmas lights generations ago, but this has tapered off since the 1960s. Lincolnwood Towers (a section of the suburb of Lincolnwood north of Devon and west of the Edens, immediately north of the Edgebrook neighborhood of Chicago) kept the mad lights thing going a bit longer, but demographic and cultural changes are now making LT lights a thing of the past too.
